1. Morocco importing 200,000 tonnes of Russian wheat

In the first half of the year, Morocco imported over 200,000 tonnes of grain, mainly wheat, from Russia, primarily from the Vysotsk grain terminal. A Moroccan delegation visited Russia to inspect grain quality control. In 2023, Russia offered Morocco wheat at reasonable prices, with significant imports in November and December. Due to adverse weather, Moroccan grain production hit record lows. Morocco imported 80% of its wheat from the EU in 2023-24. For 2024-25, import demands are estimated at 7.5 million tonnes of wheat and 1.5 million tonnes of barley..

2. Mexico’s new leadership to drop plan for reducing yellow corn imports

Mexico’s new leadership, under President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum, will not aim to reduce yellow corn imports, diverging from outgoing President Lopez Obrador's goals. The focus will be on maintaining self-sufficiency in white corn for tortilla production. Mexico, a major importer of US corn, imported 15.3 million tonnes in 2023 and is set to import 14-16 million tonnes this year. A 2023 decree banning GM corn use for tortillas and animal feed has led to a USMCA dispute, with a final report expected in November.

3. China’s COFCO projects bigger Brazil soy, corn harvests in 2025

China's COFCO International projects an increase in Brazilian soybean and corn harvests for the 2024/25 cycle and is preparing to advance the expansion of a key port terminal next year. Luiz Noto, the company's new CEO for grains and oilseeds in Brazil, stated in written answers to Reuters that the firm would begin operating the first phase of the new terminal at the port of Santos, Latin America's largest, in the first half of 2025. This will position COFCO as one of the largest grain exporters in Brazil.

4. French soft wheat rating holds at four-year low as rain persists

France's main wheat crop condition remains at a four-year low with 62% rated good/excellent, unchanged from the previous week and down from 83% a year ago. Wet weather has stressed crops and raised concerns about poor yields and crop disease. Winter barley ratings also dropped to 64% good/excellent from 65% the previous week, with no harvest yet. The agriculture ministry predicts an 11% decline in winter barley production due to reduced planting and yields.

5. Iran’s domestic wheat purchase at over 5.6 million tons since April

Iran has purchased 5.6 million tons of wheat worth over $1.647 billion from domestic producers since April, an increase of 450,000 tons from last year. So far, the government has paid farmers over $692 million, nearly half of the total owed. Khuzestan province supplied the most wheat, followed by Golestan, Fars, and Ilam. It is estimated that 14.5 to 15.5 million tons of wheat will be harvested by year-end, meeting domestic needs. In 2023, Iran’s wheat production increased by six percent to 14 million tons, making it the 14th largest producer globally, according to the USDA. This increase comes as global wheat production decreased to 782 million tons.

This week's global grain news covers key supply and demand trends. Morocco imported over 200,000 tons of wheat from Russia due to low domestic production. Mexico's new President Claudia Sheinbaum has dropped plans to reduce yellow corn imports, focusing on white corn self-sufficiency. China's COFCO International expects higher soybean and corn harvests in Brazil for 2024/25 and is expanding the Santos port terminal. France's wheat crop is at a four-year low due to rain, with declining winter barley production. Iran's wheat production rose by 6% to 14 million tons, meeting domestic needs.

Understanding these trends is crucial. Fluctuations in production and import policies affect pricing and availability. Staying informed helps buyers make strategic decisions, such as diversifying sources or securing contracts early to mitigate supply chain risks.
